The life-sized paper boat was launched during Ireland’s national maritime festival, Sea Fest 2016 at Galway.

Created by German artist Frank Bôlter, the ‘On A Voyage’ project is described as “a whimsical, epic and heroic attempt” to build and sail a giant paper boat.

The artist made the vessel with members of the Kinvara Sailing Club.

The boat was a giant-scale and seaworthy version of the traditional folded paper yachts made by children.

It was launched at Kinvara Pier on 2 July and sailed into Galway Harbour alongside a flotilla of Galway Hookers.

It was also escorted by other watercraft.

Bôlter has travelled all over the world creating giant paper boats which have set sail in European and Sri Lankan waters.

Following its successful voyage, members of the public were able to tour the paper boat.

The ‘On A Voyage’ art installation was a pilot programme for Galway 2020, a bid by the Irish city and county to become the European Capital of Culture in 2020.

Sea Fest attracted more than 60,000 visitors over the weekend of 2-3 July.

Other events at Sea Fest 2016 included the Galway Hookers’ challenge for the Galway Plate, the arrival of the tall ship, The Phoenix and 78.8 metre naval service ship, L.É. Niamh.
