Margaret Sanderson died after she fell from her narrowboat into the Macclesfield Canal. Her jacket became entangled in the boat's propellor.

An inquest has heard how Margaret Sanderson died after becoming trapped underneath her boat on the Macclesfield Canal.

The 80-year-old was reversing the narrowboat close to the number 47 Broadhursts Swing Bridge when she lost her footing and fell into the water.

Her jacket became entangled in the vessel’s propellor.

Her husband, who was on land opening the bridge, leapt into the canal to try and save her.

She was eventually freed and brought to the canal bank with the assistance of a passerby and the police.

Margaret was taken to hospital, but later died of multi-organ failure due to near drowning.

The tragic accident happened on the morning of 13 July 2016.

The couple were experienced boaters and lived permanently onboard the vessel.

The coroner ruled her death as accidental.

Cheshire Police have launched an investigation after a woman died after she fell into the Macclesfield Canal at Gawsworth, near Lyme Green.

The 80-year-old became trapped underneath her boat.

She was pulled free by a member of the public before being rescued from the water by police officers.

The woman was carried from the canal by stretcher before being airlifted to Macclesfield District General Hospital by air ambulance.

She later died in hospital.

The incident happened between the number 47 Broadhursts Swing Bridge and the number 46 Dane Moss Bridge.

As a result of the incident, this stretch of the canal had to be closed for around two hours.

Police offices, staff from North West Ambulance Service and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene.

The incident happened at around 10am on 13 July.

The woman is believed to have fallen off the back of the boat after it had come through bridge 47. Her husband was on board at the time.

In a statement released on 13 July, Cheshire Police said: “At approximately 10.10am today officers from Cheshire Police were called to reports that a woman had fallen into the Macclesfield Canal at Gawsworth, near Lyme Green.”

“Officers attended the scene along with staff from North West Ambulance Service and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
