The Royal Thames Yacht Club will be doing it for Great Britain in the prestigious amateur event.

It’s time. The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup starts today and runs through to Saturday 19 September.

The action takes place in Narragansett Bay, north of Gould Island, or on Rhode Island Sound, south of Brenton Point Park. The racing location will be chosen each day.

The Rolex Cup differs from standard events as identical sails and equipment are provided to each team and the rig tune is standardised across the fleet. Clubs who don’t have access to a Swan 24, charter boats for the occasion through the organisers, leading to a level playing field for all.

And things look good for the British team. The Royal Thames Yacht Club won the Sail Newport Regatta and took the bronze in the Swan 42 National Championship.

Those in the know believe that the club are all set to become the first team from outside North America to win the Cup.
