The 70-year-old man had to be airlifted to hospital after his yacht caught fire in the boatyard of Hartlepool Marina.

A Hartlepool man remains in a critical condition in hospital after a yacht fire in the town’s marina.

Firefighters were called to the marina at around 5pm on 27 June following reports that a yacht was ablaze.

Crews from Stranton Station in Hartlepool and Stockton attended.

The man was found unconscious inside the yacht, which was out of the water and in a boatyard next to the marina.

He was airlifted by the Great North Air Ambulance to hospital.

Firefighters then damped down the fire on the boat.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire and Rescue said the yacht sustained around 20% fire damage, 20% heat damage and 50% smoke damage.

Cleveland Police said an investigation by officers has found that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.
