The redevelopment of Pendennis Shipyard has won the infrastructure category in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) South West Awards.

The Pendennis Shipyard redevelopment in Falmouth, Cornwall has been chosen as a winner in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) South West Awards.

It beat the Hallenbeagle Site Remediation, Bridport Household Recycling Centre and Bristol Royal Infirmary New Ward Block to take the infrastructure category.

The RICS awards aim to showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment.

Pendennis Shipyard transformed their estate as a result of increasing demand for its specialist services.

The existing hard-standing infrastructure was completely rebuilt and replaced by larger construction halls, workshops and offices, together with a non-tidal wet basin, specifically designed to cater to the needs of the superyacht industry.

The joint managing director, Mike Carr, said: “Pendennis recognised the need to expand and modernise our facilities to cater to larger yachts, as well as respond to the increase in demand for our specialist services.”

He continued: “The redevelopment plan has ensured that we remain competitive in the global superyacht industry, and continues to impress visiting yachts and owners.”

Ward Williams Associates, who submitted the project for the awards, provided multidisciplinary construction consultancy services throughout the project.

The redevelopment was part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Pendennis Shipyard now has some of the largest and most accessible superyacht new build and refit facilities in the world.

The judges at the awards commented: “This comprehensive masterplan redevelopment of a ship building facility has revolutionised the Yard’s ability to handle and work on large “superyachts”. The delicate heavy lifting and manoeuvring between water and covered work halls has been made much safer and quicker, increasing time within each contract for value-added work. Innovative engineering was used throughout whilst facilities for the workforce and visiting crews have been much improved.”

“Having been built on time and within budget and being awarded a BREEAM “excellent” rating, add further to the credibility of this project. The judges were particularly impressed by the efficiency of both the construction phase and the subsequent operation of this complex and specialised facility, its important contribution to continuing the tradition of highly skilled boat building trades in this historic Cornish harbour town and the dedication of management to the training and wellbeing of the workforce”.

All of the category winners will now go forward to the National RICS Awards Final in October for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their category.
