The 30-year-old had been mackerel fishing with two others when the incident happened, with a search still ongoing for Jason Buchan and David Stead.

Rescue crews began looking for the missing men at around 5pm on Monday after a member of the public alerted emergency services to the overturned boat in the Firth of Forth.

Two lifeboats and an RAF helicopter were involved in the search, with Mr Stewart being recovered from the water around a mile from shore.

MCA maritime operations manager Mark Rodaway told the BBC: “Half an hour into yesterday’s search we located the overturned hull of the small fishing boat which gave us extremely good data on the position and 45 minutes after that we recovered the gentleman who, sadly, was subsequently declared deceased.

“So we know where to look. The search area itself remains quite tight and I have got an awful lot of assets to cover that.”
