An man from Cleckheaton fell into a canal while navigating a lock in Ravensthorpe on Sunday night (18 October). Emergency services responded and recovered the unconscious man who later died in hospital.
An unnamed 60-year-old man from Cleckheaton has died after falling into a canal in Ravensthorpe on Sunday night (18 October).
The man drowned while attempting to navigate a lock on the River Calder along with his 32-year-old sailing partner. The accident occurred when the older man fell into the water while the younger man was off the boat and working to open the lock gates.
The younger man jumped into the water in a rescue effort but was unable to locate the older man. He then climbed up to a roadway and flagged down a passing taxi for help.
Local emergency service crews including police, fire, ambulance and paramedics were called at 8 pm. Several crews from surrounding municipalities responded and attended the scene while a police helicopter searched the river with searchlights and thermal imaging equipment.
Ambulance and fire rescue teams recovered the unconscious 60-year-old from the water and performed CPR on the scene. The man was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield where he later died.
