Volunteer crews from St Mary’s lifeboat station were drafted in to help the Fastnet competitor on Wednesday

Lifeboat crews from St Mary’s were drafted in to help a 46ft yacht from Germany earlier this week after she lost her rudder during the Fastnet race.

The RNLI launched to the ocean-going vessel Shakti at 4pm on Wednesday after receiving reports they were rudderless 47 nautical miles north west of the Isles of Scilly.

A jury-rigged replacement proved ineffective and the 13 crew on board the yacht were towed back to St. Mary’s harbour by the volunteer crew of the lifeboat, arriving back just before midnight.

The lifeboat was then refuelled and placed back on the moorings ready for service.
