A new division of the Italian yard, Ferretti Security and Defence, will launch its debut model this summer, called the FSD195

Ferretti Group is one of the biggest boating brands in Italy, but now the firm has set its sights on a new territory with the launch of Ferretti Security and Defence.

Commissioned by the Italian government to design and build “a new range of high-tech naval platforms,” the new venture will launch its debut model, the FSD195, in 2016.

Boasting a top speed of 50 knots and a maximum range of more than 400 miles, the new 20m (65ft) security patrol and defence boat will be used to protect Italy’s coastline.

Speaking at the launch event in Rome yesterday, interior minister Angelino Alfano said: “It is my pleasure to welcome the advent of an Italian company like Ferretti Group in the Security and Defence sector, which is vitally important for our country.”

FSD195 is already under construction and Ferretti Security and Defence has also produced designs for a range of vessels from 40ft-116ft.

The smallest model, FSD115 (pictured above) certainly bears the Ferretti design hallmarks, with smooth flowing lines and an elegant profile.

Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, added: “FSD’s mission is to develop vessels whose performance and efficiency meet the challenging demands faced by those who guarantee the safety of our waters, an issue that has always been associated with all of the operations undertaken by our group.”

The Ferretti Security and Defence 195 is due for launch this summer, but don’t expect to see it patrolling the Monaco Yacht Show.
