A man was relieved of his duties on board a cargo ship in Scotland after he was suspected of being over the legal limit
A cargo ship’s master has been charged with being over the legal drinking limit after he was found drunk onboard a vessel outside Dundee Harbour.
Andrejs Borodins, 53, was relieved of his duties on board Frifjord on Monday after he was suspected of being drunk by a pilot who boarded the vessel to help guide it into the harbour.
Local police were contacted and were waiting at the quayside when the ship docked in Dundee.
Mr Borodins was charged with sailing the vessel while almost four times over the legal limit and was taken to police headquarters where he spent the night in the cells.
He appeared before Sheriff Charles Macnair on a petition on Tuesday and was assisted by an interpreter, as his first language is Russian.
A solicitor representing Mr Borodins made no plea or declaration on his behalf and applied for bail.
However, as Mr Borodins’ passport is still on board the vessel and because he does not have a UK address, it was refused.
Sheriff Macnair remanded him in custody and continued the case for further examination.
The Bahamas-registered ship was en route to Canada and is reportedly unable to leave Dundee until a replacement master is found.
