Following the success of the Singlehanded Transatlantic races, a letter to Yachting Monthly proposed that a shorter solo ocean race be held. The first race was in June 1975.

From Royal Cornwall Yacht Club as the British Start to the Azores Archipelago as the destination, the AZAB (Azores and Back race) is run every four years over a distance of 2500 miles, approximately 1220 miles on each leg.
