The Dungeness-based painter will showcase some of his most beautiful artwork at Jonathan Clark Fine Art gallery in London's Chelsea from February 4-26. Take a look at some of Purser's paintings images here.
Kent born and based painter Keith Purser has a modernist fascination for form and making and focuses his art on the English coastal world with its boats, beaches, and fishermen’s huts, whilst deeply observing the history of our island.
Coastal landscapes is Purser’s main subject. He has depicted several coastal towns and locations, including Dungeness, Hastings, St Mary’s Bay, Brighton, St Ives and Tintagel to name a few.
Purser’s paintings capture the mood and weather in the nature of these seaside towns. His almost abstract style utilises texture, found objects and colour harmonies with an evocative eye and technique.
The artist says:
“It is not so much either the landscape or the sea itself that has held my interest down the years but where they meet the ever changing give and take of solid ground and flowing waters, together with all the constant variations in light and movement, both of the sea and things afloat.
“From where we live at Lydd on Sea we have the white cliffs of Dover to the left and regular sightings of the French coast to the right with one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world in between. The constant variations that the sea provides – different by the day, from flat calm to raging gale – adds to the rhythm of shipping of all kinds. From small dinghy to the huge container ships that populate the horizon. Though I don’t sail myself these provide an endless supply of subject matter for painting.”
Keith Purser’s exhibition takes place at the Jonathan Clark Fine Art gallery in Chelsea, London, from February 4-26.
